Why Visualising your information makes ultimate sense while planning your expenditure?

What is the problem statement?

If you have tried managing expenses in your home during pressing circumstances ie., when you have loads of other things to do you may have hit a wall looking at the complexity it can present to you. Sometimes you are totally confused and disorganized and are unaware of the expenditure that is going to hit you in the near future.

There are people who are good at this no doubts. But as we age, many of us feel that the amount of data we need to process and the amount of expenses we need to gauge is enormous and we may miss out on the important ones many a time. Couple that with other disturbances such as pressure at work, household chores, lack of sleep and a general lack of time and we tend to move towards assistant apps on our phones which will keep track of the costs for us.

Again there are some really good apps in the market for that such as expense managers ranging from simple ones, all the way to ones that even manage and read your bank statements and show you your networth value in order you get to know how you are performing. But sometimes these are overwhelming and they themselves become items on which we need to spend extra time feeding the data for them to interpret.

The need of the hour …

To be honest with you, given the amount of complexity that I have in life personally, I am looking out for a million different ways to keep things simple all the time. Be it at my work, or conversations, or at home – consolidating accounts, keeping emails short or avoiding them, using collaboration boards when possible and so on and so forth.

So in the quest for keeping things simple, I had to find a way to organize my expenses that I am facing or will face in the future. Again I did not want to plan years ahead. Say just for this year. 12 months. And I had one burning need. The data must be visible to me all the time, without any sort of reminders and I must be able to track the progress on the goals or tasks.

The solution – simplicity

I started thinking like a kid – what would a kid do given the limited resources he had access to, to note down something? Yes! Jot it down in a pen and paper. But then I am an adult so I can add a bit of flair to it, right ?

Size

So first I scaled up the size to a marker sheet or a cardboard sheet fairly large enough. This solved two issues for me – one, I can write a lot and put in many items there by varying the font size choice, and two – I can walkby where it was put up and glance at it whenever I wanted to.

Buckets of content

There was no need to put in all information randomly and in an unordered list on that sheet. But rather to split it into many different categories or buckets as we will call it. Its the same simple thing everyone knows and does. Since I planned for a complete year one obvious division was monthwise expenditure. Another was by type of expenses – some are mandatory expenses, some are nice to have but not important expenses, and others also included things like savings – basically money that you deem will not be accessible to you for spending (for me I considered this as an outgo)

Content representation

Content can be represented in multiple ways as you would know it. A to-do list which is simple and says some things are done when they are done. Or a more organized list by date or month with amounts per each item to give more info. I chose a sort of hybrid approach – for some buckets I used plain text without end dates, and for some items like savings I used “Smileys” or “Frownies” – meaning if there is a smile, I saved up for the month, else I did not.

For categorization vertically it was columns for each month. For horizontals I divided based on priority or differentiation. Smileys were best shown below expenditures since it was a savings category. Everything on top was super important but everything in the middle was nice to have though not must to have.

I could still use one more separation for the things I actually binged on, when it was not planned to give me a visualization of where I wasted money. How you put the data is up to you as long as there is one view on everything.

The results

The experiment had such a positive impact on me, I cannot convince you enough that you must try it out too

  • Ensure you use large size cardboard paper to list out your items
  • Ensure you categorize clearly
  • Ensure you put things that are not important lower in the list
  • Use both text and indiciations like smileys to make important things fun
  • Smileys in my case have to be earned and not earning a smiley relates to a whole month (basically a large time period) wasted which questions your basic discipline abilities and keeps you on track without getting disturbed or distracted.
  • Keep adding the things you are additionally buying so you have a full picture at end of the year to discuss and reflect
  • Put in things like vacation and family time as they are important too and cannot be compromised. Basically everything you want to do or attend to should be in there
  • Any new recurring investment should feature in the next year’s chart without being missed out.
  • Show people and talk about your chart to people and try to inspire them like I did for you.
  • Last but not least celebrate small but significant achievements both on savings and being accurate about your planning.

ICICI bank to provide social banking through Facebook in 2012

According to an email received, ICICI bank is set to usher in banking via Facebook in the year 2012. It is not exactly clear what or how they intend to do it. But for starters they are planning to include a page of their own for you to like on Facebook.

Here is an except of the plan:

As we step into 2012, we re-affirm our commitment to continue offering you superior banking services in line with our philosophy of ‘Khayaal Aapka’. We are pleased to inform you that ICICI Bank will soon be present on Facebook. The ICICI Bank page will include a one-of-its kind ‘Your Bank Account’ app through which you can access your bank account information while on Facebook. You can also choose to ‘Like’ our page and get updates on exclusive offers.

It is only known at this point that they will provide an app which will let you interact with the bank backend. But given the number of security loopholes in Facebook or any other social application/website so far, this in my opinion is only a recipe for minor disasters on average users who are already being lured by useless offers and mails.

Your next loan could be denied because of your CIBIL report!

So I happened to apply for a car loan at SBI. I was anticipating that a usual home verification would happen and later on the loan would be sanctioned. I was pretty right in my assumptions except that I did not anticipate that the officer who would verify my credentials would come armed with a CIBIL report.
The report she showed me was nothing less than astounding. She pointed out to me on what all loans I had taken since 1999 for a whole period of ten years. My bike loan, esrtwhile car loans, personal loans, credit card spends – everything was in that report neatly outlined. Courtesy CIBIL.
CIBIL is the credit information bureau Inida limited, a company that helps money lenders understand their credit worthiness of their borrowers. Every time you go for a new loan or credit card spend in huge amounts, these details are at regular intervals shared by the lenders (banks) to CIBIL. So in essence there is a history maintained with CIBIL on a regular basis on the new loan(s) you have taken and the status of the old loan(s) you have already borrowed. Each time the lending agency notifies CIBIL that a particular loan has been closed, CIBIL makes the pending amount “0” on that loan, which is technically when the loan is ACTUALLY closed.
However there are few cases where the lending agencies do not notify CIBIL on loan closures, or perhaps more regularly than others, which leads to some inconsistent information about your loans. It is at this point that we as borrowers must go behind these banks, to make them send the closure report to CIBIL so that your credit history is made CLEAN by reflecting the proper status. Also, there are two types of reports that CIBIL generates – a customer copy (which is essentially your copy) and the lender copy (which is what banks prefetch while issuing a new loan to you each time). The former copy is more detailed, has the account numbers, amounts, and types of loan sanctioned, sanctioning authority, etc. The latter also indicates the amounts, and closure status while it does not give the account numbers and other sensitive information to third parties. This is for obvious security reasons of your data not being able to to be misused.
Along with the famous Dun and Bradstreet Corp of the USA, CIBIL has ushered in a new era of helping lenders understand clearly the profile of their borrowers, and borrowers understand clearly their spends and loans they go into to help make them plan more efficiently for their life needs. So then you may ask what is the way to get your own CIBIL report.
The answer is very simple. Go to www.cibil.com and signup as a customer. Needless to say you need to provide valid credentials like address proof, id proof etc. For a meager amount of about less than Rs.200, you can in no time access your credit (loan) information to help yourself better understand what you have been spending on, and how much of your credit history is clean in terms of repayments.

ING Vysya Bank (Koramangala) : heralding the next revolution in banking?

We have seen many banks since a decade. With the pioneer Citibank deciding to set shop in India, its been no looking back for many banks since then to start enticing their customers in many different ways to retain them. The public sector banks too realized this down the line and banks like Canara Bank, SBI and Bank of Baroda have now quickly upgraded their service level to be both personal and professional to the extent that it matters.

If you have seen the Samsung advertisements their caption reads “Next is what?” This is the caption they have set as a vision to themselves to continually innovate all the time. So then can there be a banking experience similar to this? Today I had the pleasant experience of opening a savings bank account at ING Vysya Bank which I wanted to share with you for those whom it would matter. Read on.

I was an existing customer of ING who recently happened to close my account. I went to SBI to open a savings account. But the kind of reception I received there, and the kind of forms I had to fill put me back a little. I decided to give ING a try again. One has to understand that you can currently use your ATM card in other bank ATM’s upto 6 times a month free. But with ING’s Orange Savings Account and a minimum balance of Rs.10000, you can use their card at will at all possible ATMs for free unlimited number of times. Reason enough to try out ING again.

Now here comes the surprise. I walk into the branch. I stand next to counter 1 where there was some customer being attended to. Within ten seconds, the official asks me what I need and when I said Savings account, in less than a minute I am offered a seat, and a form to fill up. And if you thought I had to fill up thousands of details, you are wrong. I signed at relevant locations, gave him one photo, put in my nominee’s name and my mother’s name and bingo – its done.

The next thing I know is I am seated with the manager Ms.Shweta, who introduced herself and after some talk, I am given a welcome kit – yes then and there all in a total of less than five minutes. Can you believe what all the kit had? You won’t if I tell you – it had the debit card, the cheque book, the ATM Pin, the internet username and Pin, instructions on all types of account charges, mobile banking Pin, customer ID and account number details, and a visiting card of the manager for further queries! 🙂 I was just DUMBSTRUCK at a loss for words. I could not believe that in ten minutes, I am walking out of the bank as an account holder with nothing more required than the details already provided.

One word – “Awesome!”. In the past ten years, never did I receive this kind of service from Citibank, HSBC, Standard Chartered, SBI, Bank of Baroda, ICICI, Canara Bank – none. Well done ING. Your customer service requires a blog post. I am more than pleased to invite others to meet you.

And as we all know managers make employees, not the other way. Ms.Shweta is proactive, informal, and inculcates a sense of belonging into all the bank employees, who do things in a right way in a very involved fashion. This is what is called zero-effort marketing. ING Vysya Bank, Koramangala is definitely an example of a well managed bank branch.

I will stick with ING as long as I can, just due to this one experience with many more to come. If you want me to describe ING Koramangala in one word – PROFESSIONALISM. Check it out yourself. And with the experience I have had at ING, there is no doubt that they will not realize their mission statement specified at the top of this post! 🙂
